SUNDRAM–”TRUTH,GODLINESSANDBEAUTY”?
Theexperienceoftheultimate,Maneesha,isalwaysthesame.Buttheexpressioncanbedifferent.
Theexpressiondependsonthemystic;theexperiencedoesnotdependonhim.
ThefirstdefinitionIgaveyouisthedefinitionbythepoetic,aesthetic,sensitiveindividual,forwhom
satyacancome–thetruthcancome–onlyasbeauty.Andtruthandbeautycreatetheultimate
peakofgodliness.Thepoetcannotimaginethatbeautywillnotbeapartoftheultimateunity.His
eyesarereceptivetobeauty.Truthcomestohimandistransformed,inhisexpression,asbeauty.
Beautyisthegodofthepoet,ofthepainter,ofallcreativeartists.
Sothefirstdefinitionwasthedefinitionfromtheartisticsoul.Mostofthemysticshavebeenpoets–
notordinarypoets,concernedwiththemundane,butpoetsofthesacred.Thissensitivityofthepoet
isessentialtoarriveatthedefinitionoftheultimateexperienceas”Truth,GodlinessandBeauty.”
Butthereareothermysticsalso,whoarenotpoetic...becausetobeapoettakesacertaintalent.
Everybodycanbeamystic,becausethemysticisourverybeing,theunfoldingofthemysticrose
withinus.Butnoteverybodycanbeapoet.Poetryisatalent,thoughitcomesverycloseto

mysticism.Soeitherthepoetbecomesthemystic–thencomesthedefinitionsatyam-shivam-
sundram–orthemysticsuddenlyfindshimselffilledwithtremendousbeautyandstartssingingand
dancingoutofhisspontaneity.Hemaynotbelinguisticallyright;thatisnothisconcern....
Meera,Kabir,Farid–theywerenotpoetsfromtheverybeginning.Theybecamepoetswhenthe
experiencehappened.Perhapsatalentthatwasdormantinthembecamesuddenlyactiveasthey
openedtheirheartstotheuniverse.Everythingopened.Animmensepoetry–whichnopoetcan
write,becausethepoemsarenotcompositions;theyaretheirheartbeats,theyaretheirverylife–
startedflowingthroughthem.
Butthereareotherpeoplewhohaveattainedtotheultimate:forexample,GautamBuddhaor
SocratesorPythagorasorLaoTzu.Theyarenotpoets.Theydon’thavethattalentofbeingapoet,
eitherinthebeginningorattheendoftheirexperience.Theirdefinitionisboundtobedifferent.
Theexperience,remember,isalwaysthesame.Buttheexpressionwilldependontheindividual.
Thesecondmostimportantdefinition,whichisinthesamecategoryassatyam-shivam-sundram,
issat-chit-anand.Satmeanstruth;chitmeansconsciousness;anandmeansbliss.Certainly,in
anydefinition,truthisgoingtobetheessentialpartthatcannotbedropped.Itistheexperienceof
ultimatetruth–justasinthefirstdefinition,intheseconddefinitionsatremainsthemostprominent.
Buttwonewthingscomein:consciousnessandblissfulness.
Thefirstdefinition,althoughbeautiful–tremendouslybeautiful–willnotbecometheexperienceof
many,becausethetalenttobeapoetisrare.Theseconddefinitionisgoingtobetheexperienceof
manymore.
Meditationbringsyoutothefinalpeakofconsciousness–thatischit,exactlyinthemiddle.Onone
sideistruth;onanothersideisbliss.Asmeditationflowers,youfindthatononehandtruthhas
revealedtoyouallitsmysteriesandontheotherblissfulnessisshoweringallitstreasuresonyou.
Itisassignificantadefinitionasthefirst,butyoucanseethedifference:thereisnoplacefor
sundram,beauty;thepersonhasnosensitivitytowardsbeauty.Butthepersonisabsolutelyalert
andconsciousofgreatblissfulnessoverflowinginhimandafeeling,anindubitablefeeling,thathe
hasarrivedhome.Thatishistruth.
InSanskrit,unlikeEnglish,wordscanbejoinedtogether.Sanskrithasanapproach...andperhaps
theapproachhascomefromtheenlightenedones.Somanypeoplehavebecomeenlightenedin
thisland.TheyhavelefttheirimpactonSanskrit,thelanguage.TheywillnotsaySat-Chit-Anand
thewayIhaveexplainedittoyou.Ihavecutonewordintothree,justtoexplainittoyou,because
inEnglishtherecannotbeonewordforallthree.Youcannotjointruth,consciousness,blissfulness
intoasingleword.TheSanskritwordissachchidanand.Allthreewordsarejoined.Satisthere,
chitisthere,anandisthere–buttheyarenotseparate,andthereisnogap:sachchidanand.
Itissignificanttorememberthattheexperienceisoneorgasmic,organic,unitaryexperience.It
doesnotcomeinpartsassat,aschit,asanand.Itcomesintoexistenceinatotality,andthattotality
issachchidanand.Todenote,toemphasizetheunity–thatneithercansatexistwithoutchit,nor
canchitexistwithoutanand–theyhaveusedajoinedword:sachchidanand.

Itisnotonlyaquestionoflanguage.Deepdownitisanexperiencethattheyallcometogether.
Infactthereisnowaytocreatedemarcations,thatthisistruthandthisisconsciousnessandthis
isbliss.Suddenlytheyareallwithinyou.Inotherwords,truthisconsciousnessandbliss;orvice
versa,blissisconsciousnessandtruth.
ThedivisionImadewasjusttomakeyouunderstand.NowIwantyoutobeawarethatinexperience
itselfthereisnodivision.Ithasthefragranceofblissfulness,ithasthelightofconsciousness,ithas
therevelationoftruth–allsimultaneouslyandtogether.Theyarenotstepstoeachother.Itisnot
possibletodroponeofthemandexperiencetheothertwo.Theyareanintrinsicunity,anorganic
unity.
Thisisalsoaverybeautifuldefinition,anditisapplicabletomoremysticsthanthefirstdefinition.
GautamBuddhawouldneverhavedefinedtheultimateexperienceintermsofbeauty.Beauty
somehowcarriesasenseofourordinarylife.Youmaysayitisamuchhigherbeauty,butstill
somethingremainsinit.Themomentyousay”beauty,”youcomedowntothebody,youcomedown
totheflowers,youcomedowntothesunset.Butthebeautythemysticsaretalkingaboutisnotthe
beautyofthesetinyexperiences.Itisthebeautyofthewhole,ofwhichwehavenoidea...ofwhich
wehavenotevendreamed.
ButtheseconddefinitionthatIamgivingtoyoutodayisabsolutelyaunity.Nothingofitatall
connectswithourunconsciousnessanditsworld–neithertruth,norconsciousness,norbliss.In
awayitispurer.Inawayitsimplymakesitclearthatyouhavegonebeyondthemundaneand
enteredintothesacred.Thewholevisionhaschanged.Notevenatracefromthemundaneisleft.
Itcanbesaidtobeamoreauthenticdefinitionthanthefirst,andmoremysticshavedefinedtheir
experiencewiththeseconddefinition.
Naturally–mostprobably–youwillcometotheseconddefinitionifyouevercometoexperience
theultimate.Veryfewofyoumayexperiencebeauty–thatisaminoritydefinition.ButIrespect
minorities,soIhavetakenitfirst.
Thisisthemajoritydefinition:morelogical,moreperfect,butlesssensitive,lesshuman.The
firstwasmorehuman;atleasttherewasaconnectinglinkbetweenourordinaryworldandthe
extraordinaryexperience.Inthisdefinitionallbridgesarebroken.Youarenomorepartofthe
ordinary.Youhavesimplytransportedyourconsciousnesstotheextraordinarywhichisnotvisible
totheeyes,whichisnottangible:youcannothearit,youcannotseeit,youcannottasteit.
Butinthefirstdefinitionthewordsundram,beauty,givesasensethatyoureyesarecapableof
seeingit;perhapsyourhandscanfeelit,perhapsyourearscanhearthebeautifulmusicinit.The
word’beauty’functionsalmostasabridge.Intheseconddefinitionthereisnobridge,butaquantum
leap.Yousimplyjumpfromthemindtono-mind.
Onlyno-mindcanbeawareoftruth;onlyno-mindcanbefilledwithconsciousness;onlyno-mind
canbeshoweredwiththousandsofflowersofbliss.Nothingrelatestoyourordinaryworld.Inthis
wayitispurer.
Bothhavetheirownprosandcons,andIwantyoutobeawareofthem.Butremember:don’t
choosethedefinition.Firstchoosetheexperience,thenthedefinitionwillcomeonitsownaccord.

Ifyouchoosethedefinitionfirst,itmaynotfityourindividualityandthedefinitionitselfmaybecome
ahindrance.
Godeeperintomeditation.Experienceisthethingthatmatters.Thenhowyouexpressitis
dependentonyou.Mostprobablyyouwilldefineitassachchidanand:truth,consciousness,bliss.
Itismoreuniversal,becauseveryfewpeoplearepoets.
IamremindedofRabindranathTagore.Heabsolutelyinsistedthatthereisonlyonedefinitionof
theultimateexperience,andthatissatyam-shivam-sundram.Hecouldnotconceiveoftheultimate
experiencenothavingbeautyinit.Hecoulddropanythingbutbeauty.Hispoeticsoulwaseven
readytosaythatyoucandroptruth,youcandropgodliness,butpleasesavebeauty.
IthappenedthatMahatmaGandhiwantedthetemplesofKhajuraho...whicharesomeofthe
mostbeautifulcreationsofman–thereisnothingcomparableonthewholeearth.Thetemplesof
PuriandKonarak,whicharesimilar,havenotachievedtheperfectionofKhajuraho.Theremust
havebeenatleastonehundredtemples,verybigtemples,andyoucannotfindevenasingleinch
whichhasnotbeencarved,whichhasnotbeenmadebeautiful.Nakedmenandwomenindifferent
posturesoflove...naturallyGandhiwasverymuchannoyed,andhewantedatfirsttodemolish
thesetemples.
SeventytempleshadalreadybeendemolishedbytheMohammedans,becauseMohammedans
haveafanaticalattitudethatGodcannotberepresentedinanystatue,pictureoranything.
Itisperfectlyokayifitisyouridea,buttointerferewithsomebodyelse’sideabecomesidiotic.
Somebodywantshisgodtobeexpressedinastatue–whoareyou?Buteveryreligionthinksit
isresponsibleforthewholeofhumanityanditintendstoimposeitsideaoneveryhumanbeing.
SowhentheMohammedanscame,theycouldnotbelieveit;theydestroyedseventytemplesof
tremendousvalue.
Butthirtyofthesetempleswerehiddeninthickforest,sotheyweresaved.NowwhatMohammedans
haddone,Gandhiwantedtodo–foradifferentreason,butwhathewantedtodowasthesame,to
demolishthem.Hewasafraidthat,”Thesetempleswillshowthewholeworldthatwearenotvery
moralpeople,thatwearenotpuritans.”
Whatkindoftemplesarethese,inwhicheachtemplehasthousandsofcouplescarvedinstone?
Full-sizedmenandwomen,sobeautifulthatonceyouhaveseenaKhajurahotemplewoman,a
statue,nowomanwilllookbeautifultoyou!Everywomanwilllookjustafadedmemoryofsomething
real.Thosestonesaresoreal...
IusedtogotoKhajuraho–itwasveryclosetomyuniversity,justahundredmiles,sowhenever
IhadtimeIwoulddrivethere.Theguidefinallybecameasannyasin–becausehewashimself
ashamedtoshowthemtopeople;butItoldhim,”Youdon’tunderstand.Youneednotbeashamed.
Thesepictures,thesestatues,thissculptureisnotobscene.Thereisnotasinglehintofobscenity,
althoughtheyareabsolutelynakedinlovingembrace,makinglove.Butthereisnotasinglehintof
obscenityunlessyourmindisfullofobscenity.”
OneEuropeanprimeministerwasgoingtocometoseeKhajuraho,andoneofmyfriendswasthe
educationministerofthestateinwhichKhajurahois.AndtheprimeministerofIndiainformedthe
