Mission Checklist
STS-96
Crew Members
Commander - Kent V. Rominger | Pilot - Rick D. Husband
Mission Specialist
Eileen Ochoa | Tamara E. Jernigan | Daniel T. Barry | Julie Payette | Valery I. Tokarev
Mission Highlights
Carried out by Discovery on May 27, 1999. First launch attempt was cancelled due to damage to the Shuttle after hail storm. STS-96
was a logistics and resupply mission for the International Space Station (ISS), Space Station Assembly Flight ISS-02-2A.1
Payload
SPACEHAB, double module. The SPACEHAB contains about 750 items that will be transferred to the ISS.
Integrated Cargo Carrier (ICC). The ICC is a flat bed pallet assembly housed in the Shuttle payload bay, and has the capability to
carry cargo on both faces of the pallet.
Integrated Vehicle Health monitoring HEDS Technology. This is the second of two planned flights. This experiment is designed to
evaluate the feasibility of using modern commercial sensors to monitor space Shuttle systems during flight in order to reduce ground
processing of NASAs fleet of shuttles.
Shuttle Vibration Forces Experiment (CVF). The SVF experiment will measure the dynamic forces between the Shuttle and a canister
attached to the Shuttles payload bay. The experiment is designed to validate a new vibration testing method that could enable NASA
to fly more sophisticated equipment on space Shuttle missions.
Student Tracked Atmospheric Research Satellite for Heuristic International Networking Equipment (STARSHINE). STARSHINE is
a mirror covered ball that will be deployed from a satellite, it will be deployed from a getaway special canister by a spring ejection
system. A combination of spring rotation and tipoff will cause it to rotate. The angular motion, and translation rate makes it visible
from Earth, where it will be studied by participating students from across the world.
External Airlock. The external airlock provides an airtight, internal tunnel between the two spacecraft after docking.
Androgynous Peripheral Docking System (APDS). A docking mechanism consisting of a structural ring, a moving ring, alignment
guides, latches, hooks, dampers and fixers. It mates with an exact copy mounted on the ISS. The APDS is mounted on top of the
Airlock
Tunnel adaptor and tunnel, for somewhat easy transportation between ISS and SPACEHAB. The tunnel adaptor provides the ability
for EV while ISS is docked to the APDS and airlock.
Orbital Replacement Unit Transfer Device (OTD) is a crane to be mounted on the ISS. Parts for the Russian Strela crane which will
be stowed on the ISS and the Spacehab Oceaneering Space System Box (SHOSS), which is designed to carry up to 400 pounds of
space-walking tools and flight equipment, will be mounted on the ICC.
Flight Summary
